Small Groups

What is a small group?

Psalm 68:6 says in part, “God sets the lonely in families.” A Testimony on the power of small groups. ‘For me, God has fulfilled that promise through small groups.

Wherever I’ve lived, no matter what stage of life I’ve been in, I have sought out a small group to be a part of.  Many of these groups have been like a family to me.  They’ve prayed me through career decisions, dating struggles (and not-dating struggles), step-parenting dilemmas, and, most recently, a long and arduous adoption process.

Small groups have been a family to celebrate holidays with when I was far from home.  They have given me a good laugh when I most needed it and a safe place to cry.  Through small groups I’ve known the joy of being supported and cared for, and of supporting and caring for others.

What’s more, by getting me into God’s Word, small groups have kept me growing.  As others share their stories and insights into Scripture, God speaks to me in ways that go beyond what I glean from time alone with my Bible.  I’ve seen how small groups are often the setting in which we fulfill God’s intention for us to accept one another (see Romans 15:7), encourage one another (see 1 Thessalonians 5:11), admonish one another (see Colossians 3:16), and above all, love one another (see 1 John 3:11).  In the intimacy of a small group, I’ve experienced what it’s like to have true brothers and sisters in Christ.’

Small Groups (Home Groups) at our parent organization, Church of the Word are gatherings of about 6 to 15 people. Most of our Home Groups meet on a weekly basis but sometimes less frequently. The focus of Home Group activity is on God’s Word, enjoying fellowship, supporting each other in prayer, and on mutual encouragement.
It is a good idea for every Christian to be involved in an active Home Group. At Church of the Word, we aim to provide many opportunities for people to join Home Groups. We offer them in different locations: Midland, Gainesville, Manassas, etc. Home Groups tackle different subjects, perhaps using study booklets, audio tapes, or video tapes. They are available on different days of the week.

Under the guidance of the Rector, new groups can be formed and existing groups re-invigorated as the need arises. Sometimes a group will meet for years, growing very deep friendships, and sometimes they covenant to meet for a season to tackle a specific subject or project.
